The goal
Around the table there are citizens and at least one impostor. Citizens know a secret word; the impostor doesn't. Citizens win if they vote out the impostor. The impostor wins if they aren't caught, if the vote ends in a tie, or if — once caught — they guess the secret word.
Roles
- Citizen: gets the secret word and its category (for example, “Pizza” · Food).
- Impostor: only gets the category (Food). They have to listen to the clues, work out the word and give believable clues without giving themselves away.
- Neutral (Chaos mode only): gets neither the word nor the category and plays on the citizens' side. Nobody knows they are neutral, so they can easily look like the impostor.
Setting up
- Open the game on Android or at impostor.axsoftware.codes/jugar. Play as a guest or sign in with Google.
- Create a private room and share the 6-character code or the invite link, or join a public match. Online games take 3 to 8 players.
- The host picks the mode, number of impostors, word packs, time per clue, clue rounds, voting time and the 3D scene.
- Once everyone taps “I'm ready”, the host starts the game and each player privately checks their card.
Clue rounds
Taking turns, each player types a single word related to the secret word. There's a time limit per clue, and the host decides how many clue rounds are played.
- As a citizen, give clues that prove you know the word without handing it to the impostor.
- As the impostor, use the category and the other clues to come up with a word that fits.
- Saying the secret word, part of it, or a direct translation of it is not allowed.
Voting
After the clues, each player votes individually for who they think the impostor is. The player with the most votes leaves the table.
- Tie: nobody leaves and the impostors win.
- A citizen or the neutral is voted out: the impostor escapes and wins the round.
- The impostor is voted out: caught! But they still have one last chance.
The impostor's last chance
When the impostor is caught, they can try to guess the secret word (they already know the category and heard every clue). If they get it right, they steal points from the citizens.
Scoring
- Impostor caught and fails the guess: each citizen scores 3 points.
- Impostor caught but guesses the word: each citizen scores 2 points and the impostor scores 3 points.
- Impostor escapes (or the vote is tied): each impostor scores 2 points.
Online games also give you experience (XP) and chips: 5 chips for playing plus 10 chips per point.
Game modes
- Classic (3+ players): one or more impostors against the citizens.
- Double agent (5+ players): two impostors who know each other and can help each other.
- Chaos (4+ players): one impostor plus a neutral who knows nothing.
Local mode: one phone
Everyone in the same room? Use local mode: type in the names (up to 12 players) and pass the phone around so each person sees their card while the others look away. Then debate out loud, let the game pick who asks first, and vote together by tapping a name. Local mode doesn't need an internet connection during the game.
Tips
- Citizens: don't be too obvious. A sideways clue (say, “oven” for pizza) lets you recognize each other.
- Impostors: listen before you speak. If you have to go first, give a broad clue that fits several words in the category.
- Everyone: watch who hesitates, who echoes other people's ideas and who switches their vote at the last second.
